Alcohol and drug abuse are readily recognised as addictions but
many other disorders, such as obsessive compulsive disorders, eating
disorders and self harming, may have addictive components and may
therefore be treated as addictive behaviours.
In addictions therapy, John and Sue use a complex blend of counselling
and therapy to address the underlying issues, which may have initially
led to the addictive behaviour, as well as working to break the
addictive cycle itself. Many addictions treatments are based purely
on motivational techniques and/or behaviour modification but we
believe in a holistic approach which both frees the client from
their addiction and gives them a new perspective on life. We believe
that this is essential if relapse is to be avoided.
Clients with dependency problems may often experience rejection
by counsellors and therapists who do not fully understand the addictive
processes, and counsellors trained only to deal with addictions
may focus only on the addictive processes and dependency issues.
Such clients may therefore have difficulties finding therapists
who will work with them in a more holistic way and on issues other
than their addiction.
John and Sue have extensive experience of working with clients
with dependency problems and are quite happy to work either on the
addictive cycle or the underlying issues precipitating the addictive
behaviour or any other area causing the client's current distress.
